Rugsville Norwich Persian Light Green Ivory Wool Carpet 5' x 8'

The Norwich pattern belongs to a soft-Persian sub-tradition that English country-house buyers favoured through the late Victorian period, when the rich carmines of classical Tabriz felt too forward for parlour use and weavers were asked to lower the volume. What emerged was a paler ground, an ivory or pistachio field rather than a deep red, with the medallion still drawn in the old way but in lighter pigment. This rug sits inside that lineage.

Two weavers worked the loom for about four months. Around 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied against a cotton warp, each row pressed into place with a wooden comb. The pile is yarn-dyed wool, hand-spun, then luster washed after weaving so the surface holds the soft sheen the Norwich character requires. The light green ground was built across two dye baths to give it the slightly uneven undertone that distinguishes plant pigment from synthetic. The ivory is undyed wool, chosen for its natural warmth.

The composition

A field of light green with an ivory medallion rising at the centre, edged with floral scrollwork that thins toward the corners rather than thickening. The drawing is deliberately quiet, line widths held narrow so the eye reads pattern rather than mass. Over time the ivory will warm into bone, the green will lighten by perhaps a quarter tone, and the slight undertone the dye carries today will become the rug's settled colour. The piece does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to age into itself.

The light green ground reads cool against warm oak and walnut floors, and reads warm against grey lime wash. The palette pairs with linen, brass, and pale wood furniture. It does not compete with primary colour in the room.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months to balance light exposure and foot traffic. Vacuum weekly with the suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a cotton cloth, never rub. A wool conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years. With this care, the rug runs into its eighth decade.
