Rugsville Norwich Persian Light Green Ivory Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

A floral medallion at room scale is one of the few patterns that carries equally in a panelled drawing room and a stripped contemporary loft. The Norwich drawing belongs to the soft-Persian school, where ivory and pale green replace the saturated reds of classical Tabriz, and the medallion is drawn lightly enough to read as ornament rather than as architecture. The pattern was originally a workshop adaptation made for English country-house buyers, and it has aged well enough to feel current a hundred and forty years on.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over roughly seven weeks by a team of two tufters and a finisher. New Zealand wool blend was pushed through a stretched cotton primary backing one tuft at a time, the pattern transferred from a master cartoon onto the canvas before work began. The back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim once the pile was complete. Final shearing was done by hand, the pile dropped to relieve the medallion against the field by a fraction of a millimetre so the drawing reads at distance.

The composition

A pale ivory ground with the medallion drawn in light green and rose, the corner work echoing the centre at lower saturation. The wool blend was selected for its take on yarn dye, which means the green carries a small tonal shift across the field rather than reading as a single flat colour. The contrast will deepen over the first year as the loose surface fibres clear and the cut wool exposes its core colour, then settle.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room arranged around a sofa and two armchairs with the rug fully under the seating, or a dining setup for eight to ten with the chairs pulled clear of the field. The ivory and green palette pairs with walnut, oak, and brass. It holds against lime-washed walls and against pale plaster. The rug expects to be the only soft-floor element in the room.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug sheds loose fibre against an active beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six to eight weeks of use as surface fibres clear; the body of the pile is unaffected. Professional dry clean every two to three years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on a single area, since the wool blend will lighten on the exposed face.
