Red is the canonical gabbeh ground colour. The Qashqai weavers of southwest Persia worked the deep madder red into their tribal carpets as the colour of welcome and of fire, a base saturated enough to set off the bold geometric figures of the tradition. The Nomad Gabbeh in textured red carries this lineage forward; a deep red ground worked at the lower knot density of the gabbeh tradition, with the texture coming from a deliberate variation in pile depth across the field.
Three weavers built this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India over around five months. The fibre is hand-spun wool tied to a cotton warp and weft. The red ground was achieved with madder root, prepared in copper vats over extended weeks before the wool was lowered. The texture across the field was produced by varying the pile depth slightly during the knotting, giving the surface a sculptural quality at room scale.
The composition
A deep red field with quiet variation in pile depth across the surface, producing a textural reading at room scale. The drawing is sparse; the rug carries its visual weight through colour and texture rather than through pattern. The madder red is not stable; over the first decade the colour will deepen toward an oxblood under the wool's lustre. The texture catches light differently across the field, giving the rug an internal animation.
What you are buying
Antique Qashqai gabbeh pieces at this size sell at $4,000 to $9,000 at North American dealers. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, in hand-spun wool, with madder dye. A hand-knotted gabbeh appreciates with use as the wool relaxes underfoot and gains lustre. The textural surface holds for decades with proper care.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a drawing room, a primary bedroom, or a den. The deep red palette pairs with cream or ivory plaster walls, with limewashed white, with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco, with brass and bronze lighting. The textured surface rewards bare feet at the side of the bed or under a low coffee table.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn for even wear. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The madder red holds its depth with this routine; the rug runs decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
