Nomad Gabbeh is the closer cousin to the original Lori and Qashqai tribal practice, where the weaver is not following a cartoon but committing the day's impressions directly to the warps. A multi-coloured field in this tradition is not a checkerboard or a striped repeat; it is a record of weather, of light, of which dye lots happened to be ready that month. The rug in front of you carries that same logic forward, on a contemporary loom in India, with the same wool grade and the same dye chemistry the older work was built on.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly six and a half months. Hand-spun New Zealand wool runs through the pile. Each panel of colour was dyed in its own copper vat with traditional mordants and prepared dyestuffs: madder for the rusts, indigo for the blues, weld for the yellows, walnut for the browns, and natural undyed fleece for the cream. Knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam at a working density of around 100 KPSI in the Gabbeh standard.

The composition

The field shifts in coloured panels and bands rather than running flat. Tribal animal silhouettes, diamond markers, and small abstract incidents float across the registers without locking into a strict grid. Each panel carries faint abrash because no two batches of vegetable dye come out identical. The result reads more like a collage of weavings than a single cartoon, which is the whole point of the nomad idiom: variety as evidence of authorship.

What you are buying

Antique multi-panel Gabbehs from before 1940 in good condition appear at European specialists at the equivalent of fifteen to twenty-five lakh, when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, with the same wool quality. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the abrash bands deepen into the rug rather than fading out of it.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a generous living arrangement or a dining-room scale. The multi-coloured field is the central event in any room it sits in, so it pairs best with quiet upholstery: linen, undyed cotton, raw leather, plain wool felt. Walls in soft chalk white, dusty rose, or deep indigo all hold the rug well; busy wallpaper does not.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so traffic and light age all the colour panels evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no rotary brush. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth from the edge inward. A specialist hand-wash every five to six years preserves the wool and refreshes the colour saturation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
