Gabbeh weaving has its own discipline within the broader tribal carpet tradition. Originating with the Qashqai and Luri nomads of southwest Persia, the gabbeh is a thicker-piled, lower-knot-density rug than its Persian-village cousins, with bold geometric figures drawn against open monochrome grounds. The Nomad Gabbeh in blue is a contemporary expression of the tradition; a deep indigo ground broken by a sparse central figure and quiet abstract incidents.
Three weavers worked this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, knotted in the lower-density gabbeh tradition that prefers depth and softness over fine drawing. The blue ground was achieved with indigo prepared in extended cold-water vats. After weaving the rug was washed for lustre and the long pile was combed by hand.
The composition
A deep blue ground carries a sparse central figure and quiet geometric incidents in ivory, soft rust, and a deeper indigo. The drawing is loose, the way nomadic weavers work without a printed cartoon. The blue carries quiet abrash from one batch of dye to the next; the eye reads the field as a single saturated blue at distance and as a tonally varied surface on approach. Over the first decade the indigo will deepen rather than fade.
What you are buying
Antique gabbeh carpets at this size price at $4,000 to $10,000 at Western dealers. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, in hand-spun wool, on a vertical loom. A hand-knotted gabbeh appreciates with use as the wool relaxes underfoot and gains lustre. The piece is built to last decades.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a drawing room or a primary bedroom. The deep blue ground sits with cream or ivory plaster walls, with limewashed white, with leather upholstery in tobacco or cognac, with brass and blackened steel lamps. The deep gabbeh pile rewards bare feet; place the rug where its sensory quality is part of the daily life of the room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; the long pile resents aggressive mechanical action. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The blue holds its indigo depth with this routine; the rug runs decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
