Heriz is the most graphic of the classical Persian traditions. Where Tabriz refines line and Kashan refines colour, the village weavers working in the Heriz idiom developed a vocabulary built on bold geometry, broad medallions, and corner work that reads at distance the way a poster reads from a far wall. The Neela pattern carries that lineage forward. Light blue and rust held in opposition, the medallion wider than the conventional drawing, the corners squared off so the field reads almost like a tile composition.

Two weavers shared the loom for about four months. Roughly 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against a cotton warp, each pass beaten into place with a metal comb. The pile is yarn-dyed hand-spun wool, then luster washed after shearing to relax the surface and bring the colour into its mellow Heriz register. The light blue carries a slight tonal drift across the field where the dye took unevenly, which is the signature of plant-leaning pigment rather than a flaw.

The composition

A light blue field carrying a stepped medallion in rust, the corners answering the medallion with the same colour at lower saturation. The border is a single wide band in deeper rust, held with restraint so the field stays open. The colour will move over the first decade of use. The blue will warm slightly and the rust will lose its first heat. What now reads as graphic contrast will, in time, read as the kind of confident harmony only a long-aged Heriz can hold.

What you are buying

Antique Heriz carpets in 5' x 8' format with comparable condition sell through Sotheby's, Bonhams, and Rippon Boswell at three to six times this asking price when they appear at auction in clean state. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, with mineral and plant dyes. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property at this number.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a sitting area with two armchairs and a sofa, a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, or an entry hallway broad enough to hold the field clear of door swings. The blue and rust palette pairs with warm wood floors, with brass, with leather, and with painted plaster in cool greys. It anchors a child's room without infantilising it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months so foot traffic and natural light spread evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly with the suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with cotton. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years. The rug runs sixty to eighty years with this routine and reaches its true colour by the second decade.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
