Mughal court carpet design grew out of the Persian tradition the emperors imported in the sixteenth century, but it took on a distinct character within a generation. The drawing softened, the floral repeats opened up, and the palette shifted toward beige and ivory grounds carrying intricate vine work in indigo, rose, and bronze. The pattern on this rug is a contemporary working of that Mughal vocabulary, redrawn for a 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) field and tied by hand in New Zealand wool.
Three to four weavers shared the loom across roughly seven months. The pile is New Zealand wool, prized for its longer staple and ability to take dye to a deep saturation without losing the slight irregularity that gives older wool its patina. The foundation is cotton, tensioned by hand and warped on a vertical beam. Each row was tied by feel and combed down with a metal beater before the next began.
The composition
A beige and ivory ground carries scrolling vine work, palmettes, and small blossoms in soft indigo, faded rose, and bronze. The pattern is dense but not heavy; the open ground around each motif is part of the composition rather than a default background. Wool's heather means no two ivory passages match exactly, which gives the rug a quiet movement under interior light. Over time the indigos deepen and the bronzes warm.
What you are buying
10' x 14' is the larger of the canonical drawing-room sizes and the most expensive to weave because every additional foot in either direction multiplies the loom-months required. Comparable hand-knotted wool pieces in this Mughal vocabulary trade through Western dealers in the three to six lakh range with a workshop attribution. This piece is offered direct from the loom at a price well below that comparable. Hand-knotted wool on cotton appreciates with use rather than depreciating across decades.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a large primary living room or a generous formal dining setting. A beige and ivory ground is the most architecturally cooperative colour for a floor, which is why it pairs with almost any palette of walls, wood, or upholstery. The rug sits especially well with walnut, brushed brass, restrained period furniture, and either oil painting or modern abstract work above the field.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to even out traffic and sunlight. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a wool hand-wash by a trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years and longer and develops the soft patina older wool pieces carry.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
