Berber weavers from the Atlas mountains built their carpets from undyed wool because the local sheep gave them ivory, charcoal, and the soft greys in between. Pattern was scarce because pattern took time the household did not have. What survived from that economy of means was a graphic vocabulary that the modern eye reads as wholly contemporary.
The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 3 weavers shared the loom across 4-6 months, working at roughly 80 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 921 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.
The composition
An ivory field, charcoal lines, and the small irregularities of a hand-drawn diamond grid. The wool is undyed, which means the contrast deepens rather than dulls as the rug ages. The composition rewards an empty room. The dominant tones run to beige.
What you are buying
An accessible point of entry into a hand-knotted carpet of real workshop discipline. The construction is the same as on the larger pieces in the same lineage; the price reflects only the smaller area of pile. The rug is meant to be used and conserved rather than displayed and protected.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a generous sitting area or a dining room under an eight-seater table. The field carries weight at room scale without losing its detail. The beige reading carries against off-white walls and cool stone, and it warms a room with darker timber as well.
Conservation
A spring and autumn half-rotation evens out the way the pile takes light. Vacuum weekly on suction only. Spills are blotted, never rubbed; a clean cotton cloth from the outside in lifts the liquid before it sets. Schedule a professional hand wash every four to five years. The piece outlives its first owner if treated this way.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
