Rugsville Moroccon Beige Wool Carpet 2' x 3'

The Moroccan tribal rug entered the Western design canon through the photographs Le Corbusier took inside his own apartment. The simplicity of the line, the warmth of undyed wool, and the refusal to fill the field made the form legible to modernists who had no other use for a hand-knotted carpet.

The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 1 weaver shared the loom across 1-2 months, working at roughly 80 knots per square inch. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.

The composition

The field is built from undyed wool in two values. The line work sits sparsely across it. The whole arrangement reads as a drawing rather than a pattern, and the room arranges itself around that quiet graphic. The dominant tones run to beige.

The piece in a room

2' x 3' (61 x 91 cm) sits under a console, beside a low chair, or as the punctuation at the end of a corridor. At this scale the field reads as a graphic object on the floor. The beige reading carries against off-white walls and cool stone, and it warms a room with darker timber as well.

Conservation

Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months to keep the wear even. Use a clean cotton cloth on spills and work from the perimeter inward. Engage a hand-wash conservator every five years for the deep clean a domestic process cannot reach. The piece holds its value across decades of household use.
