Flatweave traditions across the subcontinent share a structural logic: weft-faced weaving on a horizontal loom, with the pattern emerging from the alternation of dyed yarns rather than from a pile. The technique predates the knotted carpet by centuries; in many households the dhurrie was the everyday floor covering and the knotted carpet was the formal piece reserved for ceremonial use.
The rug was woven over three to four weeks on a horizontal loom. The weaver works without pile, building the trellis structure from the alternation of dyed weft over a cotton warp. The face and back are similar; the rug is reversible when life rotates rugs in the room. Each colour change in the field is a separate weft pass, planned in advance and counted out as the work progresses up the loom.
The composition
A neutral ground holds the rug. The trellis drawing sits inside it without forcing contrast, so the geometry registers as part of the field rather than printed on top. The colour will warm slightly with use, the way wool always does, and the pattern will read more clearly as the surface settles. Sunlight falling across the rug brings out the secondary tones, and evening lamp light pushes the warmer values forward.
The piece in a room
At 5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug sits in a primary bedroom under a queen bed with twelve to eighteen inches showing on either side, in a medium living room under the front legs of a sofa, or in a study laid full under desk and chair. The neutral register pairs with walnut, oak, and warm metals. The trellis drawing reads cleanly from any of those orientations because the composition was scaled to live at this format rather than scaled down from a larger original.
Care
Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Flatweaves take spot cleaning well; blot with cool water and a mild detergent. Reverse the rug end-for-end twice a year so wear and light age both faces evenly. A professional cold wash every three to four years is sufficient. The piece is reversible; if one face takes more wear, flip and use the underside for an extended second life.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
