Beni Ourain weaving comes from the high Atlas plateau, where the tribes have spent generations perfecting a graphic register built on undyed wool and bare geometry. The rug functioned as bedding, prayer mat, and storyboard at once, and the lozenge motif that runs across this piece is one of the oldest abstractions in the tradition, a glyph for a fold of land, a fenced enclosure, or a route between settlements.

The piece was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over five months on a vertical loom. The pile is undyed organic wool, lanolin-rich and hand-carded before spinning, which is what gives a Beni Ourain its characteristic plush hand and slight tonal variation across the cream ground. The brown lines are worked from naturally pigmented sheep fleece rather than dye, which is why the contrast deepens slowly with age rather than fading.

The composition

An ivory ground that reads cream from across the room and resolves into bone, oat, and warm white at close range. Brown zig-zag lines cross the field in irregular passes, drawn the way the high-plateau weavers draw, by feel rather than from a cartoon. The brown is variable, sometimes leaning chocolate, sometimes a softer dun, because the fleece itself is variable. Self-bound edges keep the field reading as a complete object.
