Among the high-plateau Berber registers, the zig-zag glyph is among the most widely shared. It appears across centuries of Atlas weaving and across the household textiles of half a dozen tribes, in different scales and at different intervals, but always read by the maker as a fold of land or a watercourse. The greyscale variant of this design is more recent: contemporary workshops adapted the cream-and-brown classic into a charcoal palette to fit the contemporary architectural rooms it now lives in.

The piece was hand-knotted in India over five months by two to three weavers. Pure organic wool worked on a cotton foundation, hand-carded before spinning to preserve the lanolin. The grey ground is achieved through naturally pigmented fleece, sorted at the spinning stage, rather than dyed. The charcoal lines come from darker fleece selected from the same pool. Self-bound edges complete the piece without binding tape or supplementary fringe.

The composition

A grey ground modulated across the field as the fleece itself modulates: lighter in patches where the spinner pulled from a paler portion of the carding, darker where the fleece itself was darker. The charcoal zig-zag runs vertically the length of the rug in irregular passes, drawn by feel rather than from a strict cartoon. The contrast is gentle, more architectural than graphic, which is why the rug reads as a considered ground rather than as a statement.
