Complete your setup
The Safi register in Beni Ourain weaving is the quietest of the variants. Where the zig-zag piece carries graphic incident across the whole field, the Safi keeps the geometry minimal, often a single column of small lozenges or a sparse scattering of brown marks across an open ground. It is the rug the high-plateau weavers traditionally made for use at the head of the bed, where the pile would be soft against bare feet on cold mornings.
This piece was hand-knotted in India over five months by two to three weavers working a vertical loom. The pile is pure organic wool, hand-carded with the lanolin retained, then spun on a hand-cranked wheel and worked over a cotton foundation. The grey is the natural colour of the fleece, sorted at the carding stage from a deliberately mixed batch. The dark lozenge motifs are worked from naturally pigmented brown fleece. Self-bound edges finish the rug.
The composition
An open grey field that holds the eye. A scattering of small lozenge marks works across the surface in widely spaced clusters, leaving most of the ground bare. The colour modulates across the field because the fleece modulates: there is no flat grey on a Safi, only a continuous slow shift between paler and darker passages of natural wool. The brown marks read almost like ink dropped on a sheet of unbleached paper.
What you are buying
The Safi is the most restrained of the Beni Ourain registers and the hardest to weave well, because the open ground exposes any irregularity in the spinning or the knot tension. At 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) this is a primary-room scale piece using organic undyed wool from a single source flock. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Antique Safi pieces from the same register move through Western dealers at multiples of this price.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits under a queen bed with margin showing on three sides, or as a quiet ground in a primary living room with a two-seat sofa and a chair. The minimal grey palette holds against architectural rooms with white walls, polished concrete floors, sculptural lighting, and natural timber. It is the rug to choose when the room is the subject and the rug is the floor.
Conservation
Organic wool requires only gentle care. Vacuum weekly on suction-only mode. Blot any spill with cool water and a clean white cloth, working from outside the spill toward the centre. Avoid alkaline cleaners, which can disturb the lanolin balance. Professional hand-wash every five to seven years preserves the natural colour and the loft of the pile.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
