Berber weavers in the high villages of the Atlas mountains worked fleece in its undyed state for centuries, partly out of practical economy and partly out of a clear aesthetic instinct. Ivory wool catches more daylight than dyed wool, and a long-pile rug in undyed fleece warms a stone room both physically and visually. The Beni Ourain Ivory carries that sensibility forward in a contemporary domestic scale. Diamond lattices and small cross-hatched protective marks are drawn in charcoal-dyed wool against a long-pile ivory ground, the geometry left deliberately freehand as a record of the weaver thinking in real time.

Three weavers shared the loom in India over roughly five months. Around 1.4 million asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, with the pile finishing at eighteen millimetres for the deep-cushion feel the tradition is known for. The wool is pure undyed ivory with the natural lanolin retained for that soft sheen, then sheared into shape only once the rug is fully knotted off the loom.

The composition

Ivory grounds in undyed wool age into the deeper warmth of bone and parchment over years of use, the way a linen sheet lived with for a decade carries more presence than a freshly-bought one. The charcoal lattice is drawn rather than printed, with each line slightly variable in width because every knot is tied by hand. Long pile lifts the geometry above the field at a soft height, which makes the rug read as sculptural rather than graphic from low seating angles.

Vintage Beni Ourain rugs in this size range routinely cross three lakh rupees in named Western dealerships, and pieces with documented provenance from individual Berber tribal groups can rise to seven or eight lakh. The Ivory is a new weaving in the same tradition, on a cotton foundation in India, in pure undyed wool.
