The Beni Ourain rug arrived in international design through a Parisian dealer's photograph published in a 1928 Le Corbusier interior, and from there it travelled into the homes of Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto, and the entire mid-century moment that built itself around natural materials and quiet drawing. The form is austere by tradition: ivory wool, fine charcoal lines, a long lofted pile. This carpet keeps that vocabulary intact, with a simple thin border in soft brown framing the ivory body rather than the open field of the more austere variants.
Three to four weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months to complete the rug at this scale. The pile is undyed cream wool from natural flock, hand-spun in long staples to give the lofted shaggy texture that the tradition demands. Approximately 2.5 million Berber knots were tied row by row across a cotton warp before the surface was sheared to a 20 mm pile. The brown border lines were drawn from naturally darker fleece, again undyed, giving the rug its tonal range without any chemical processing.
The composition
An ivory ground with the slight irregularity of pile that wool carries when it has not been bleached. Soft brown lines around the perimeter, hand-drawn rather than ruled, mark a quiet border without enclosing the field. The minimalism reads as architectural; the wool reads as alive. Over the years the ivory will warm slightly into bone and the brown will deepen, and the rug will look more itself a decade from now than it does on the day it arrives.
What you are buying
Vintage Beni Ourain rugs at this size pass through European and American specialists in the eight to fifteen lakh range, with provenance pieces clearing twenty. This is a hand-knotted Berber-tradition weaving in undyed New Zealand-grade fleece on cotton foundation. There are no synthetic dyes, no machine elements, no shortcuts. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the drawing-room or large primary bedroom scale, sized to carry a sofa-and-coffee-table grouping with the back legs of two flanking armchairs on the rug. The ivory works with whitewashed walls, blackened steel windows, oak and walnut furniture, and ceramic in unglazed clay. It pairs with leather, linen, hand-thrown pottery, and natural stone. The long pile means the rug rewards bare feet and minimal furniture.
Conservation
Vacuum on suction only, never use a beater bar on long-pile wool. Shake the rug outdoors twice a year to release fine dust. Blot spills immediately with cotton cloth; the lanolin in undyed wool repels most staining. Schedule a professional hand wash every five to seven years for full surface refresh. With proper care this rug serves seventy to ninety years of active use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
