Beni Ourain carpets came down from the Atlas mountain villages of North Africa, where Berber weavers worked thick fleece into long-pile carpets meant to insulate stone-floored rooms against winter cold. The motif vocabulary is austere. Diamond lattices, lozenge chains, and small cross-hatched protective signs are drawn freehand against undyed ivory or natural beige fleece, with the geometry left deliberately irregular as a record of the human hand. The Beni Ourain Beige translates that sensibility into a contemporary scale and finish, the lattice loose enough to breathe and tight enough to hold the room together.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for around five months. Roughly 1.4 million asymmetric knots tied by hand against a cotton warp, the pile finishing at eighteen millimetres which is twice the height of a typical Persian piece. The wool is pure undyed beige with the natural lanolin retained, giving the surface a slightly silvery cast under direct light. The contrasting motifs are drawn in deeper charcoal wool yarn-dyed once before knotting.

The composition

The beige ground reads with the quiet variation only natural fleece can produce. Strands run from cream through oat to wheat depending on the sheep the wool came from, and that variation is what distinguishes a real Beni Ourain from a flat-toned commercial reproduction. The charcoal lattice draws the eye through the field at the slow pace of a hand-drawn line. Long pile catches and holds light differently from short pile, lending the carpet a soft sculptural depth that flattens into a graphic field only at a distance.

What you are buying

Genuine Berber-tradition Beni Ourain rugs from named Western importers begin at one and a half to three lakh rupees and rise sharply when the pieces are vintage. The Beige is a new weaving in the same vocabulary, on a cotton warp in India, in pure undyed wool with a single charcoal accent. Hand-knotted wool at this pile depth appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the long pile improves rather than erodes underfoot.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room or a generous bedroom. The long pile and undyed beige ground pair particularly well with rough-textured plaster walls, with linen and bouclé upholstery, and with mid-century modern wood furniture. The carpet sits beautifully under a queen or king bed with around two feet showing on each side. It softens hard floors acoustically and visually.

Conservation

Vacuum on suction setting weekly, beater bar disengaged. The long pile responds well to occasional gentle airing in indirect outdoor light to lift the lanolin. Address spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, blotting only. A wool-trained hand wash every five to seven years preserves both fleece and foundation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
