The Beni Ourain tradition belongs to the Atlas mountains of Morocco, where Berber weavers have been producing thick undyed wool carpets for living and sleeping on for at least a thousand years. The drawing is restrained, usually a loose diamond lattice in dark wool against a creamy ground, with the lattice broken or shifted in ways that read as deliberate rather than as mistakes. The pattern carries because the field does the work; the diamonds are scaffolding for a carpet whose subject is really wool.
Four weavers worked this 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) Azrou-pattern carpet over roughly six months. The wool is undyed highland fleece, hand-carded and hand-spun so the natural colour variation between fleeces carries into the ground; this is the source of the slight beige-to-bone shift across the field. The dark passages of the diamond lattice are dyed minimally with walnut hull. The carpet was knotted in India in the Beni Ourain idiom, on a vertical loom, with the symmetric knot the Berber tradition has used for centuries.
The composition
An undyed beige ground carries a soft diamond lattice in dark walnut brown, drawn loosely so no two diamonds are quite the same proportion. The pile is long and the wool is unwashed beyond the initial scour; what looks like an off-white is in fact the natural colour of the fleece. The carpet reads more as a textile than as a pattern object, which is the entire point of the Beni Ourain idiom and the reason it has held its place in modern interiors for sixty years.
What you are buying
Authentic Beni Ourain carpets of this scale and wool quality trade in the European and American interior trade between $4,000 and $9,000. This is a hand-knotted piece in the same tradition, in undyed highland wool, with the same long pile and the same loose diamond drawing. The carpet appreciates with use as the wool develops its lanolin patina; the form is durable and the natural fibre repels minor soiling without chemical treatment.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary living area or a generous bedroom. The neutral palette is unusually generous toward other materials: it sits well with raw oak, walnut, brass, leather, linen, and most upholstery colour ranges. The long pile reads particularly well in rooms with low contemporary furniture where the carpet itself becomes part of the texture of the seating area rather than a graphic object beneath it.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each season so the long pile compresses evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction with the beater bar off; a beater bar pulls fibre out of any long-pile wool carpet regardless of price. Shake out monthly if the size and a balcony allow. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to six years. Spot clean small spills with cold water and a clean cotton cloth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
