Rugsville Moroccan Beni Ourain Ahfir Gray Beige Carpet 8' x 10'

The grey-and-beige Beni reads as the most architectural variation in the Berber sleeping-rug tradition. Where a beige-and-brown Beni warms a room toward the autumnal and an ivory-and-charcoal Beni reads coolest, the grey and beige register sits between, holding cool against north light and warming under lamp without losing the disciplined geometry that defines the lineage. The diamond drawing is the same vocabulary the highland tribes used in their tent rugs.

Three weavers shared the vertical loom for around five months. The pile is undyed long-staple wool on cotton warp, tied in symmetric Turkish knots row by row. The grey is the natural variation in the highland fleece, drawn from the shoulders and back of the sheep. The beige is the cream of the back fleece. There is no dye involved at any stage. The wool was clean-rinsed, sun-dried for three days, and brushed back to the long pile that the Beni Ourain sleeping rugs carry.

The composition

A soft grey field with loose beige diamond geometry running through it. The lines breathe rather than ruling. The diamonds shift in scale and proportion across the field, the trace of weavers working from memory rather than from a paper cartoon. The border is implied rather than drawn, the geometry simply fading toward the selvedge. The pile is twenty millimetres, which gives the surface a soft sculptural quality.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; the long pile catches in a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug runs nine decades.
