Gabbeh is the older, freer cousin of the formal Persian rug. Qashqai and Luri shepherds wove Gabbehs for their own use, on portable looms, with a thicker pile and a coarser knot, and the visual language stayed deliberately simple. A single animal, a tree, an ochre field, a few dyed bands.
One weaver and a finisher worked the rug over around four weeks. Wool was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was done by hand with long shears, cutting the pile down so the design reads in relief above the field. Hand-spun wool, washed after finishing to settle the colour and bring the surface to its sheared finish.
The composition
The work is built on a ivory register. The geometry is sized for room scale, not for the photograph. Across distance the field reads as a single colour with movement inside it; on close approach the small variations in tone and weave become visible as the trace of a slow, hand-dyed process. The piece is built to be lived with rather than displayed, and it will deepen in colour and tighten in feel across its first year on the floor. The piece in a room
At 3' x 5' the piece is bedside or hallway scale. The composition is sized to be read at close range and rewards the slow look. The rug sits naturally under a single armchair with a side table or beneath a hall console with a small mirror above it; the surrounding furniture can be kept restrained.
Care
The piece needs gentle weekly vacuuming, suction only, and prompt blotting of any spill with a clean dry cloth. Loose fibre will clear from the surface across the first six to eight weeks of use; this is a property of the tufting process and not a flaw in the rug. Have the piece professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
