Rugsville Modern Art Multi Wool Silk Oxydye Carpet 8' x 10'

Two oxidised carpets from the same workshop are never identical. The technique that produces the silver-cast surface depends on the iron content of the wash water on the day, the ambient temperature in the drying yard, the precise duration of the bath, and the way each particular pile takes the chemistry. The piece in front of you is a sister rug to the previous Modern Art Oxydye but resolves with its own chromatic settlement, which is the point of the technique. Each finished carpet is a one-off.

Three weavers worked the loom for six months on the wool and silk pile, which was knotted on the Persian asymmetric structure on a cotton foundation. After the rug came off the loom, it went into the iron-rich oxidising bath under hand supervision, then through a neutralising rinse and a final clear wash. The silk passages took the chemistry differently from the wool, producing the layered surface texture that defines an oxidised contemporary carpet.

The composition

A multi-coloured field unified by the silver cast of the oxidising wash. Rust, ochre, soft teal, indigo, and ash all read as muted second-stage versions of their original saturation. The silk catches in the warmer passages and shifts as you cross the room. There is no border. The cartoon was painted at full scale in the studio and corrected on the loom as the first metres of pile came off the beam. The composition reads as weather drawn through a soft filter.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug twice a year. Suction-only weekly vacuuming, beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton, no rubbing on silk. Specialist wash every five to seven years by a conservator with oxidised-carpet experience. The piece runs sixty to eighty years if maintained on this discipline.
