The medallion carpet is the oldest formal grammar in the Persian tradition and the one most closely associated with court patronage. A central form, framed corner spandrels, a layered border, and a field that exists to support and counterweight the centre. The grammar carried into the Mughal courts of India in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and never left the looms. The rug in front of you carries that lineage in a navy and ivory palette pulled toward a contemporary reading.
The carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly six months by three weavers on a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool tied row by row in the Persian asymmetric knot over a cotton warp and weft. The dyes were prepared in small batches from indigo, madder, walnut hull, and weld, with the navy built by repeated dipping in a fermenting indigo vat to layer up the depth that single-dip dye cannot reach. The pile was sheared by hand to a uniform 10 mm in a final pass with long flat shears.
The composition
A deep navy field carries a central medallion in ivory and old gold, with corner pendants echoing the centre in reverse colour. The border layers a primary ivory band against secondary navy guards. Indigo holds depth and shifts subtly with the angle of light because the dye sits on the wool fibre rather than penetrating it through and through, which is also why vegetable indigo ages with such grace.
What you are buying
Antique Persian medallion carpets in 8' x 10' scale with strong indigo and clean condition trade through European salerooms at $20,000 to $50,000 depending on attribution. This is a new piece in the same fibre and construction, on the same kind of vertical loom, in the same dye tradition. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an unusual property among objects placed underfoot.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or sits beneath a substantial dining table with the field showing on all sides. Navy carries against warm wood floors, against cream upholstery, and against brass detail. Pairs especially well with white plaster walls because the indigo lifts the wall colour rather than competing with it. Cool grey paint flattens the indigo; warm white or oat lifts it.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth, working from the outside inward. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years keeps the cotton foundation supple and the indigo true. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty years and acquires depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
