Transitional medallion design sits between two long traditions. From classical Persia it inherits the central anchor, the floral corner work, the layered border. From mid-twentieth-century European interiors it inherits restraint, the willingness to let a beige ground carry most of the visual weight while the medallion stays quiet enough to live with year after year. This rug belongs to that joint inheritance.

Three weavers shared the loom for about six months. Roughly 2.5 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against a cotton warp, each pass packed down with a metal comb. The pile is hand-spun wool, yarn-dyed in the skein, then luster washed at finishing so the surface holds the soft sheen the transitional palette requires. The beige is undyed natural wool taken from a mid-warm fleece, chosen because it will warm into honey over the first decade of use rather than dulling toward grey.

The composition

A wide beige field with a softly drawn medallion at the centre in tones one or two steps deeper than the ground. The corner work answers the medallion at lower saturation, the border held narrow so it never crowds the field. The drawing is restrained throughout, the line widths held narrow so the eye reads pattern as ornament rather than as architecture. The colour will continue to settle for the first two to three years. The beige warms, the medallion deepens, and the rug reaches its settled tone around year four.

This is a new weaving in the same lineage, hand-knotted on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, finished entirely by hand. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object you place on a floor that holds value the same way.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a primary living room laid out around a sofa and two armchairs with the rug fully under the seating, or a dining table for six to eight with the chairs pulled clear of the field. The beige palette holds against lime-washed walls, against pale plaster, and against panelled wood. It pairs with linen, walnut, brass, and leather, and lives easily under unframed art on paper or canvas.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and foot traffic age the rug evenly across the face. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. The rug runs eighty to a hundred years with this routine.
