Graphic compositions translate well to the production loom because the pattern was always built on grid logic. The blue palette here was developed in studio over months before the first metre came off the loom, the colour matched against samples in both daylight and lamplight to ensure the rug reads the same across the times of day a room is actually used.

What sits on the loom is the result of months of preparation. The blue palette was tested against actual furniture and walls before approval; the graphic drawing was scaled and re-scaled so the figure works at sofa distance and at door distance equally well. The production loom carries the design with the discipline that hand-knotting cannot match for repeatability and price.

The fibre

The fibre is heat-set polypropylene. Colour is set in the yarn at the spinning stage and runs the full length of the strand, not just on the surface, which is why sun does not bleach it. The yarn rejects water-borne staining; spills sit on the surface and lift with a cloth. The pile does not shed, and the rug requires no professional cleaning across its working life.

The composition

Blue carries the field. The graphic drawing sits at the right register to read from across a room and resolve on approach. The composition is built to be a considered ground rather than a focal piece, which is the more useful role for a floor covering in a room organised around upholstery, art, and lighting that already do the work of focus. The colour holds together under both daylight and warm interior light without shifting register.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for living rooms in flats, dining areas under a six-seater, primary bedrooms, and corridors with foot traffic the wool tier would not survive. The geometry holds at distance and reveals on approach, and the rug pairs comfortably with both warm and cool wood floors. Lighter walls push the blue forward as a focal field; darker walls let it settle into the architecture.

Care

Vacuum weekly, suction or gentle beater. Address spills with a damp cloth; the fibre rejects most stains if caught within an hour. The rug can be cold-washed if necessary and dries within two hours laid flat. Direct sun does not bleach the colour the way it bleaches pigment-printed rugs.
