Complete your setup
Mashad carpets take their name from a workshop tradition in north-eastern Persia that produced curvilinear medallion compositions on a generous scale, with palettes anchored in burgundy, deep green, and ivory. The lineage runs back to the late nineteenth century and the looms that supplied the courts and the wealthy merchant houses. The piece in front of you is a faithful descendant of that tradition, woven for a contemporary room.
The rug was made in India by three weavers over roughly six months. Each knot is tied by hand against a vertical beam in hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation, the weavers reading the pattern from a hand-painted cartoon hung beside the loom. The dyes were prepared in small batches from madder, indigo, weld, and walnut, matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The result is a pile that reads as paint rather than print.
The composition
A central medallion floats on a deep green ground, edged in old ivory and tied corner to corner with floral pendants in madder red. The border layers a primary rust band against secondary indigo guards. Green and red are the hardest pairing in the palette to keep elegant, and the rug solves it by sitting both colours against a softened ivory rather than against pure white. Saturation will deepen and the ivory will warm into bone over the years.
What you are buying
Antique Mashad carpets in 8' x 10' scale and good condition trade through European auctions in the $18,000 to $35,000 range. The construction in front of you matches that lineage, knot for knot, fibre for fibre, in a contemporary weaving. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an unusual property for any object underfoot.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) takes a six to eight seat dining table or a full sectional with the field showing on all sides. The green and red palette wants warm wood floors, plaster walls in the cream to clay range, and lighting that is incandescent rather than cool. Dark walnut and cherry hold the saturation. White paint flattens it.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth from the edge inward. Schedule a professional hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this discipline the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
