Flat-pile carpets in this register were originally made for the courts of Persia and the Mughal palaces of South Asia. The vocabulary travelled, the loom travelled with it, and today the same knotting technique is practised by Indian weavers who learned it from masters who learned it from masters. The visual logic is centuries old; the wool and the dye are the current season.

Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation. A single weaver on a single vertical loom for three months, returning to the bench every morning to add another row to the same composition. The discipline of that daily return is what gives a hand-knotted carpet its consistency and what separates it from a faster construction.

The composition

Gold sits across an open ground, the secondary motifs scaled small enough that the field stays the principal subject. The border is restrained. The colour is layered, two or three values close together rather than a single flat tone, so the surface holds depth at every viewing distance. The wool catches the light differently from the morning to the evening, and the rug looks slightly different at every passing.

Send the carpet to a wool-trained hand washer every five years. The rug is built to outlive its first owners with this regimen, and the dye work deepens rather than fades over the working decades.
