Mahal carpets emerged in the late nineteenth century from villages in the wider Sultanabad weaving region, made for export to Edwardian and early-American markets that wanted a carpet which could carry a large room without dominating it. The drawing is large in scale, open in field, soft in palette, and disciplined in border. The Mahal in front of you sits squarely inside that drawing tradition.

Three weavers shared the loom for around five months to complete this 8' x 10' carpet in India. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed entirely with vegetable preparations: madder root for the rust and rose, indigo for the blues, oak gall and pomegranate rind for the yellows and soft greens, walnut hull for browns. The dye baths were prepared in copper vats over open flame and matured for two to three weeks before the wool entered them, the slow process that gives vegetable colour its depth.

The composition

An ivory field carries an open central drawing in faded madder rust, indigo, and walnut brown. Vine work runs corner to corner with the relaxed asymmetry only a hand-prepared cartoon allows. The border is single, restrained, drawn in the same indigo as the field accents. Vegetable colour does not arrive at full saturation; over the first decade the rust will lighten, the indigo will deepen, and the ivory will warm into bone. The carpet matures rather than fades.

What you are buying

Period Mahal carpets from the 1880 to 1920 window with comparable drawing and condition sell at international auction at twenty to fifty thousand US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same drawing language, the same loom geometry, the same vegetable system. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There are very few household objects of which that is true.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sets a primary living room or a six-to-eight seat dining footprint. Vegetable-dyed wool reads warm against pale plaster, putty, and natural lime walls; it sits well against walnut, oak, and brass. The carpet expects to be the considered ground under furniture, not the loud event in the room.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never apply hot water to vegetable-dyed wool. Direct sunlight through a window will gently mature vegetable colour rather than damage it. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
