Rugsville Madallion Persian Gray Wool & Silk Carpet 6' x 9'

The medallion is the oldest formal composition in the Persian repertoire. A single dominant central form, framed by spandrels at the corners, set within a balanced field and a structured border. The discipline of the medallion is that the eye must read the central form first and only afterward register the field, the spandrels, and the border. Rendering the medallion in a grey wool and silk palette is a contemporary move that strips the historical vocabulary back to its structural essentials.

The loom held two weavers across four and a half months. Pile blends wool with mulberry silk, with the silk concentrated at the medallion centre and along the spandrel arms where the cartoon called for the chromatic lift only silk can provide. Wool was kettle-dyed in three close greys and a soft charcoal, with a paler bone passage held in reserve for the spandrel infills. Persian asymmetric knots were tied row by row against the loom beam.

The composition

A medium grey field carries a central medallion in cooler pewter with silk-lifted bone at the centre. Cornerspandrels reach diagonally from each corner toward the medallion, drawn in soft charcoal with bone infills. The vine work across the field is restrained, almost silvery, and reads as a quiet ground rather than as a competing drawing. The border carries a single guard band in cooler grey. The whole composition holds together as one tonally-modulated grey rather than as competing colour fields.
