Rugsville Channing Persian Style Brown Handmade Wool Carpet 6' x 6' Square

The hand-tufted technique came to India in the twentieth century as a way to translate painterly studio designs into pile rugs without the year-long cycles of knotting. It married the visual freedom of a painter's cartoon to the tactile depth of a wool surface, and over the following decades it became the format of choice for designers who think in colour fields rather than in repeats. This brown wool piece works that translation in the figure, drawn first as a cartoon and then transferred line by line onto a stretched canvas.

Production ran 5 weeks. 2 tufters built the field row by row through a stretched canvas, after which the back was bonded with natural latex and lined with cotton scrim, and a finisher took shears to the pile to give the pattern its final relief. The wool was sourced from highland flocks and dyed in small batches before being loaded into the tufting gun.

The composition

The composition reads as a single graphic gesture in brown. The figure is carved with a slight bevel so light catches the edges and gives the surface a quiet animation. Wool over canvas, finished by hand to lift the figure above the field by no more than two millimetres of relief, just enough to register at standing distance without breaking the visual unity of the rug.

The piece in a room

6' × 6' (183 × 183 cm) square pieces solve a particular geometry: the awkward bay window, the small formal dining, the corner conversation group. The proportion centres a room rather than directing it. The brown pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, brass and linen; it works against both painted plaster and exposed brick.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses a little fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile; the structural density of the rug is unaffected. Professional dry-clean every three years to lift accumulated soil from the latex backing.
