Tufting allows a designer to draw on the floor. Once a cartoon is traced onto the canvas, the artisan moves through the field colour by colour, building the image like an enameller laying glaze. The technique fits modern compositions especially well because it can hold both crisp graphic lines and soft tonal washes. This brown wool piece works that translation in the figure, drawn first as a cartoon and then transferred line by line onto a stretched canvas.

It was hand-tufted in India over 4 weeks by 2 tufters and a finisher. Wool yarn was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one stitch at a time, sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim, then carved by hand with long shears to relieve the figure from the ground. The pile sits at twelve millimetres, which is the height that gives wool both spring underfoot and depth of colour at the surface.

The composition

A field of brown carries the figure through carved relief; the figure sits a hair proud of the ground, which is what allows the pattern to read at room scale rather than dissolving into surface noise. The wool was over-dyed in two baths so the colour holds a slight shift at different angles, the way a glaze sits over an undercoat in oil paint. The pile springs back after compression because the fibre is long-staple and was steam-set after shearing.

The piece in a room

2'6" x 14' (76 × 427 cm) suits a flat-scale living room, a generous bedroom, or a dining area for six. The pattern holds against modern upholstery and against vintage timber alike. The brown pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, brass and linen; it works against both painted plaster and exposed brick.

Care

Use a low-suction vacuum without the brush head for the first two months while the pile settles. Spot-clean spills with cool water and a wool-safe detergent, working from the outside of the spill inward to avoid spreading the stain. A professional clean every two to three years restores the loft of the wool. The latex backing will outlast the pile under normal indoor use.
