Rugsville Channing Persian Style Brown Handmade Wool Carpet 2'6" x 10' Runner

The hand-tufted technique came to India in the twentieth century as a way to translate painterly studio designs into pile rugs without the year-long cycles of knotting. It married the visual freedom of a painter's cartoon to the tactile depth of a wool surface, and over the following decades it became the format of choice for designers who think in colour fields rather than in repeats. This brown wool piece works that translation in the figure, drawn first as a cartoon and then transferred line by line onto a stretched canvas.

1 artisan worked the canvas for 3 weeks. The wool pile was punched in by hand, latex bonded at the back, and the finisher sheared the surface to lift the motif above the field. Edges were over-bound with cotton tape so the rug holds shape under furniture without needing a separate underlay.

The composition

A field of brown carries the figure through carved relief; the figure sits a hair proud of the ground, which is what allows the pattern to read at room scale rather than dissolving into surface noise. The wool was over-dyed in two baths so the colour holds a slight shift at different angles, the way a glaze sits over an undercoat in oil paint. The pile springs back after compression because the fibre is long-staple and was steam-set after shearing.

The piece in a room

2'6" x 10' (76 × 305 cm) reads as a deliberate moment rather than a floor cover. Use it under a coffee table on bare boards, in a hallway, or layered over a flat sisal. The brown pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, brass and linen; it works against both painted plaster and exposed brick.

Care

Vacuum once a week, brush head off. Light shedding for the first month or two is normal as short fibres work loose. Treat spills by blotting, not rubbing, and never let liquid sit on the surface. Schedule a professional dry-clean every couple of years to lift accumulated soil from the cotton scrim and protect the latex bond underneath.
