Bryson Persian Medallion Handmade Blue Wool Carpet 12' x 15'

The Persian medallion is one of the oldest formal architectures in carpet weaving. A central anchor, a field of related drawing, and a border that manages the relationship between rug and wall: the format predates printed paper and outlasts every architectural style it has been laid into. Blue is the most ceremonial of the medallion grounds, and the format scales naturally to the largest domestic carpet at this 12 by 15 ft size.

This 12 by 15 ft (366 by 457 cm) hand-tufted piece took a team of three tufters and a finisher close to seven weeks in India. The wool yarn was driven into a stretched cotton canvas with a hand-held tufting gun, row by row, then locked from the back with natural latex and reinforced with a cotton scrim. The medallion drawing was set out from a studio cartoon and worked carefully so the floral palmettes hold their detail. The pile was sheared at finishing to relieve the medallion drawing slightly above the field for visual depth.

The composition

A blue field at two saturation values, deeper at the centre and softening toward the corners. A central medallion drawn in ivory and warm gold anchors the rug, with floral palmettes and vine work pulled through the surrounding field. The border carries deeper blue with ivory and gold inflection. The drawing is generous in scale, calibrated for room reading rather than close inspection. Blue holds its depth across the wool; the ivory warms toward bone over years of use.

The piece in a room

12 by 15 ft (366 by 457 cm) is the canonical scale for a large drawing room or open-plan living area. The rug expects a three-seater sofa with two armchairs and an ottoman above it, or a ten-to-twelve-seater dining table with chairs that stay on the rug when pulled out. Pair with white plaster walls in warm putty, brass, walnut, leather, and warm linen. The blue medallion is the room visual centre; let the architecture above stay quiet.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Light shedding for the first six to eight weeks is structural and resolves on its own. Professional dry clean every two to three years. A rug at this scale benefits from a non-slip underlay along the full footprint to prevent the wool foundation from shifting under heavy furniture and to preserve the latex bond.
