Bryson Persian Medallion Handmade Blue Wool Carpet 10' x 14'

The Persian medallion is the most painted, copied, and mistranslated motif in carpet history. It originated in court ateliers in the late fifteenth century, formalised in book-binding cartouches before it ever reached the loom, and was reinterpreted at every craft scale from royal silk to village wool. The medallion in this 10 by 14 foot rug is drawn from that lineage but worked at the scale a contemporary room asks for, with a centred bloom in faded blue surrounded by a calmer field that lets the geometry settle.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over roughly six weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched primary cloth one row at a time with a hand-operated tufting gun, and the back was sealed with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim. The final pass was carving by hand with long shears, where the finisher cuts down the area immediately around the medallion to lift the central motif a few millimetres above the surrounding field. That carved relief is what gives the design dimensionality at room scale.

The composition

A central medallion in deep saturated blue, spandrel work in a paler tone, a generous open ground in dusted ivory and chalk. The borders are restrained, single line guards rather than the layered cartouche borders that turn lesser medallion rugs busy. Wool gives the colour body and a slight sheen at certain angles. The pattern is graphic enough to read across a long room and detailed enough to reward a closer look.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is dining or great-room scale. The rug expects a ten or twelve seat dining table sitting fully within its bounds, or a sectional sofa group that frames the central medallion as its visual anchor. Walnut or oak floors set off the blue. Walls in warm white or pale clay let the ivory ground breathe.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar lifted, working with the pile rather than against it. Tufted rugs shed loose wool fibre for the first six to eight weeks; the body density of the rug is unaffected. Blot spills with clean cotton cloth, never rub. Professional dry cleaning every three years extends the life of the latex bond significantly.
