The dhurrie has lived in subcontinental domestic and palace interiors for a thousand years, a flat-weave form that survived the arrival of pile carpet under the Mughals because its lighter weight and reversibility suited the climate and the season.
A pair of weavers worked the dhurrie on a horizontal flatbed loom for 2 weeks, beating the weft down at every pass with a hand comb. The result is a tight, weft-faced textile that lies low against the floor. The jute / sisal carries its colour with the slight tonal variation only natural fibre and small-batch dye produce. No two square feet of the rug read identically; that irregularity is the difference between a hand-loomed piece and a printed copy. The yarn was sourced and spun specifically for this production batch rather than pulled off general inventory, and the colour register stays consistent across the full run of the rug.
The composition
The natural reads with the soft, slightly hand-spun irregularity that distinguishes loom work from machine print. Pattern is built up from solid blocks of colour rather than through pile relief, and the joins where colour meets colour are visible as small structural marks the weaver did not try to hide. Each end of the rug carries hand-finished fringe, the warp ends knotted by hand into a flat selvedge that protects the structural integrity of the field. The fringe is part of the construction, not a decorative addition; cutting it shortens the working life of the rug.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) is sized for an entry hallway, an open dining footprint, a sun room, or a verandah with covered seating. The natural carries the rough, structural quality the form has had since the Bengal floodplains began producing the fibre commercially.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Spot clean with mild soap on a clean cloth and blot dry. A flat-weave can be dry cleaned by a textile specialist every two to three years. Reverse seasonally to even out the wear; both faces are working surfaces and the rug benefits from rotation. Avoid extended direct sun on saturated areas of the dye, and use a thin underlay to keep the rug from sliding on hardwood or stone.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
