Rugsville Lillie Oriental Red Persian Carpet 5'4" x 7'7"

The Persian-rooted oriental pattern in this rug grew out of contemporary studios working in conversation with classical Persian and Anatolian sources. The drawing was redrawn at scale, the colour register tuned, and the field set to read as one considered composition rather than a repeating tile. The studio worked through several iterations in chalk and ink before the cartoon was approved for the loom, with the proportions adjusted at each pass.

The composition belongs to a generation of Persian-rooted oriental drawings that reset the conversation about what a contemporary rug should do. Quiet rather than loud, calibrated rather than decorative, designed to sit underneath a room rather than to compete with everything in it. The red palette holds the line.

The fibre

Solution-dyed polypropylene. The colour is fixed during spinning, which makes the yarn nearly bleach-resistant and water-shedding at the surface. The pile holds a flat plane under furniture and does not shed loose fibre, which is the practical advantage of a synthetic surface engineered specifically for floor use.

The composition

Red carries the field. The Persian-rooted oriental drawing sits at the right register to read from across a room and resolve on approach. The composition is built to be a considered ground rather than a focal piece, which is the more useful role for a floor covering in a room organised around upholstery, art, and lighting that already do the work of focus. The colour holds together under both daylight and warm interior light without shifting register.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for living rooms in flats, dining areas under a six-seater, primary bedrooms, and corridors with foot traffic the wool tier would not survive. The geometry holds at distance and reveals on approach, and the rug pairs comfortably with both warm and cool wood floors. Holds the room. Pairs with cream upholstery and warm timber; difficult against pink walls.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cloth. Machine wash on a cold 30 degree cycle if a spill resists spot cleaning; the size folds to fit a domestic drum. Dries flat in two hours. No professional cleaning required across the life of the rug, which is one of the practical advantages of the construction.
