Ivory in handwoven textile work is rarely a simple absence of dye. A true ivory ground requires the weaver to source wool from a specific clip, usually from a flock raised at altitude where the lanolin holds a creamy cast against the wash water. Cheaper undyed wool reads as grey or yellow; only carefully sorted highland fleece carries the warm cast that makes ivory work as a design ground. The Laka design in undyed silk and lightly off-white wool depends on that warm cast for its restrained graphic register.

Two weavers shared the loom for four months on this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) carpet. The pile is a blend of undyed hand-spun wool and undyed bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Tibetan senna loop wrapped over an iron rod and cut by knife. No dye bath was used. The colour comes entirely from the natural cast of the fibre, with the silk threads sitting a few microns brighter than the wool to give the design its tonal layering. The carpet is washed once after weaving in a mild olive-soap solution to relax the surface and lift the dust of the loom.

The composition

A warm ivory field with sparse linear motifs drawn in slightly brighter silk passages. The wool reads as the warm tonal ground of cream and bone; the silk reads as the cooler register of pearl. The contrast is subtle from a doorway and resolves on close inspection. The piece will continue to age. Ivory wool warms toward antique cream over the years, the silk holds its cooler tone, and the composition gains depth rather than losing it.

What you are buying

Undyed hand-knotted wool-and-silk Tibetan carpets are unusually difficult to produce, since the wool clip must be sorted carefully for tonal consistency and the silk must come from a single batch. Western galleries price comparable ivory pieces between three and five lakh rupees. The senna construction, the fibre quality, and the un-dyed-but-washed finishing process are identical to that pipeline. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary bedroom flanked by side tables, sits cleanly under a single armchair and ottoman, or works as the floor element in a small library. Ivory wants warm wood, brass, leather, and saturated upholstery in cobalt, ochre, or oxblood. Pairs poorly with cool grey-tone walls; the wool is calibrated for warm light and reads dull against cool plaster.

Conservation

Rotate annually. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth; ivory wool shows wine and oil more readily than coloured grounds, and prompt blotting is essential. A wool-and-silk specialist hand-wash every four to five years preserves the warm cast of the fibre. With this care, the piece runs fifty to seventy years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
