Gabbeh weaving began among the Qashqai and Luri pastoralists of the Zagros range, who tied carpets in their tents from the wool of their own flocks and used them for sleeping, sitting, and eating. The motifs were not designed but lived: a single animal, a tree, a band of geometric stones, set into a field that the weaver could reorganise as she went. The red field in this carpet is the modern echo of that tradition, deepened by a wool wash and tightened to a knot density the original tents would never have managed.

Three weavers shared the loom for close to four months. The pile is hand-spun wool with the long staple length that gives Gabbeh its characteristic plush hand. The knotting follows the Persian asymmetric, denser than a tribal original but still loose enough to keep the relaxed silhouette of the form. The red was achieved with madder root in two successive baths.

The composition

A saturated madder red carries a small constellation of ivory and indigo motifs, off-centre and asymmetric, the way a tribal weaver would have placed them by feel. The border is minimal, a thin ivory guard rather than a formal frame. The red shifts from cherry in direct light to almost garnet in the shadow of furniture, the result of madder dye over hand-spun wool with an irregular twist that catches light at varying angles.

What you are buying

Antique Qashqai and Luri Gabbehs of similar size and condition routinely sell at Bonhams and Nagel in the eight to fifteen thousand dollar range. This is a new weaving in the same fibre tradition, with the madder dye process intact, at a fraction of that price. A wool carpet of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the red will deepen with age rather than fade.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or an informal dining area. The Gabbeh palette pairs with raw oak, kilim cushions, leather club chairs, and white-washed walls. The red field reads warm against terracotta-toned plaster and carries upholstery in cream, charcoal, and unbleached linen. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned wallpaper; the carpet expects to be the graphic anchor.

Conservation

Rotate by a half turn every six months so the field weathers evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Spot clean with a cotton cloth and cool water. Schedule a professional hand-wash every five years to refresh the lustre of the wool. Cared for this way, a Gabbeh of this construction will outlast its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
