Rugsville Keira Floral Silver Ivory Wool Carpet 3' x 5'

The botanical motif on this rug looks back to the European chintzes that English merchants commissioned from Indian textile workshops through the 1700s. A measured floral cadence, no figural incident to anchor the pattern to a single moment. The result is a design that travels well across rooms and across decades of use without locking itself to the moment of its making.

Hand-tufted in India by 2 tufters and 1 finisher over three weeks. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a hand-held gun, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was sheared by hand to bring the silver motif up off the field.

The composition

Silver reads as a sustained ground rather than a printed flat. Subtle tonal shifts run across the field where the yarn was dyed in separate batches and then spun together, so the colour breathes as the eye crosses the rug. The pattern is paced to read from across a room and reward closer inspection at the edge of the carpet. The geometry is restrained where lesser designs would clutter the field.

The piece in a room

The runner at 3' x 5' (3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm)) takes the corridor, the kitchen galley, the side of a bed, or the foot-of-bed bench. Long narrow rugs ask the eye to read the room lengthways and give the space its sense of progression. The silver register holds against both pale and saturated walls.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses a small amount of fibre to a beater bar regardless of price, so the suction-only setting is what protects the pile. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres settle out of the new pile. Professional dry-clean every three years to keep the colour true and the latex backing supple.
