Caucasian rugs were originally village pieces, woven in homes rather than workshops, by women working from memory and from the geometry their mothers had taught them. The figures that emerged, hooked diamonds, eight-pointed stars, latch-hook borders, were not drawn from cartoons but tied freehand against the warp, which is why every Kazak carries small asymmetries that a purely commercial copy of the same pattern would not. A red and ivory field in this lineage is the most studied colour pairing in the canon.
This carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly four months by three weavers. The wool was hand-spun, with the red prepared from madder root in copper baths and the ivory ground left undyed and washed in spring water. The Turkish symmetric knot was tied on a cotton warp throughout, at roughly 100 to 130 knots per square inch. The pile finishes at about ten millimetres after shearing, with goat-hair-wrapped selvedges and integral warp-end fringes hand-knotted in pairs.
The composition
An ivory ground carries two large hooked diamond medallions in red, each enclosing a smaller cross figure. Filler ornaments scatter the field around the medallions in indigo, madder pink, and a soft camel. The border alternates ivory and red reciprocal trefoils, framed by two narrow indigo guard stripes. The red drifts visibly across the field as the dye lots changed during weaving; that drift is the abrash collectors look for.
What you are buying
Late nineteenth-century Caucasian Kazaks of comparable size and condition appear at international auction in the $8,000 to $22,000 band, with the rarest examples reaching higher. A new hand-knotted revival in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, made in India by three weavers over four months, sits well below replacement cost. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is uncommon for any household object.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary sitting area or a dining setting under a six-seater table. An ivory and red Kazak rewards white or warm-grey walls, dark wood floors, and quiet upholstery in unbleached linen or natural leather. Pair with brass lighting, walnut joinery, and timber rather than chrome and glass. The geometry pairs particularly well with mid-century furniture; the carpet and the chairs share a vocabulary of clean line.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end to end every spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly on suction-only with the beater bar lifted off. Spills go up with white cotton pressed straight down, lifted, repeated. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool conservator every five to seven years to maintain the depth of the madder red and the warmth of the ivory.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
