New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a Caucasian-revival Kazak demands without losing the slight irregularity that gives wool its patina. The fleece runs longer in staple than Indian or Chinese stock, with a finer micron count, which means the spinner can twist a yarn that holds dye into its core rather than only on its surface. That depth of pigment is what allows a red and ivory Kazak to read as a saturated object from across a room and as a softly drifting field on closer inspection.
This carpet was hand-knotted in India by three weavers over roughly four months. Wool was prepared in copper vats of madder root for the field red, with the ivory ground colour left undyed and washed only in spring water with mild olive-oil soap. Knots are Turkish symmetric, tied across two warps, at roughly 100 to 130 per square inch. The cotton foundation gives the pile its dimensional stability. Selvedges are hand-wrapped in goat hair, fringes are integral warp ends.
The composition
An ivory field carries a column of red hooked medallions running along the long axis. Smaller geometric ornaments in indigo and madder pink fill the space around the medallions in the Caucasian tradition of densely populated negative space. The border is a narrow band of reciprocal trefoils in ivory and red. The wool's natural sheen catches light unevenly along the spin axis, so the rug appears slightly more luminous when viewed along the warp than across it.
What you are buying
Comparable nineteenth-century red-and-ivory Caucasian Kazaks of this size have closed at Skinner, Christie's, and Rippon Boswell in the $8,000 to $22,000 range. This is a current hand-knotted weaving in the same tradition, in vegetable-bath wool on cotton, made in India over four months. The carpet appreciates with careful use; the dyes settle, the wool gains hand, and the rug becomes more itself with each year on the floor.
The piece in a room
The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) format suits a primary living area, a dining room under a six-seater table, or a generous bedroom. An ivory and red Kazak settles into rooms with white or off-white walls, dark stained or oiled timber floors, and quiet upholstery. Pair with brass, walnut, and worn leather. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned curtains; the medallions need flat textile around them to read clearly.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end to end twice a year. Vacuum weekly on suction-only with the beater bar disengaged. Spills lift with a dry white cotton cloth pressed straight down, lifted, repeated. Schedule a professional hand wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years to maintain the dye depth and the wool's lanolin.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
