By the seventeenth century, the Mughal ateliers in northern India were producing silk carpets that rivalled the Safavid workshops of Isfahan in fineness and colour. The court favoured deep reds in the field, since red was the colour of imperial dignity in Persian and Mughal aesthetic codes alike, and red carried the floral and medallion compositions to their fullest visual saturation. The Damsa pattern in the piece in front of you carries that lineage into a 6' diameter silk round in red.
Two weavers worked this rug for around six months. The mulberry silk is reeled from northern Indian cocoons and twisted into a fine knotting yarn. The cotton warp and weft are stretched on a circular jig that maintains the concentric tension a round form requires. The dye palette runs through madder root for the red ground, indigo for the blue accents, and oak gall for the ivory and gold, all prepared in copper vats before the silk is lowered for staged dyeing.
The composition
A central rosette in ivory and gold opens into the deep madder red ground, with floral and tendril work radiating outward in radial symmetry. The border, also in red with an ivory and indigo guard band, follows the curve of the circumference. Silk reflects ambient light at every angle, so the red shifts between garnet and cherry as the viewer moves around the piece, and the floral motifs appear to lift or recede depending on the angle of the sun.
What you are buying
Pure silk hand-knotted round rugs in red at 6' diameter carry tags between 4,500 and 9,500 USD through Western specialists. The radial weaving technique is harder than rectangular construction, and pure silk in this density requires master-level skill. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Silk floral rugs develop a soft luster along the lines of foot traffic that machine equivalents do not produce.
The piece in a room
6' Round (183 cm diameter) sits at the centre of a foyer with a round centre table and a chandelier above, beneath a circular dining table for four, or as the floor for a sitting nook with a wing chair and side table. The deep red palette pairs with walnut, brass, ivory plaster, brown leather, and rich silk upholstery. Silk dyes hold best out of direct sun; an east-facing or curtained room suits the rug long-term.
Conservation
Rotate the rug ninety degrees every three months. Vacuum on the lowest suction setting with no beater bar and no brush. Blot any spill immediately with a clean dry cotton cloth, working from the edge of the spill toward the centre. A silk conservator should hand wash the piece every four to six years. Never machine wash, never steam, never use hot water.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
