Silk weaving represents the most demanding end of the hand-knotted carpet tradition. The fibre is finer than wool, takes a higher knot density, holds saturated dye more deeply, and reflects light in directional bands that change as the viewer moves around the rug. Indian silk weaving in particular grew out of a six-hundred-year exchange between Persian master weavers and Indian patrons, and the drawing vocabulary today still carries that hybrid lineage. The pattern in this rug works in that tradition.

Three weavers shared a vertical loom for nearly seven months. The pile is mulberry silk on a cotton warp, knotted by hand row by row using the Persian asymmetric knot. Silk is unforgiving: a misplaced knot is visible at any distance and cannot be brushed out. Each row is checked at the loom before the next is begun. The deep red ground was achieved with a layered madder-and-cochineal dye lot matured in copper vats for three weeks. The accent ivory and pale gold tones come from undyed and lightly washed silk threads inserted at the high points of the drawing.

The composition

A deep red ground carries a central medallion drawn in the classical Persian floral idiom, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion in mirror. Vining stems and small palmettes radiate into the field. The border carries a layered floral repeat in ivory, pale gold, and indigo accents. Under directional light the silk catches and releases across the field, which means the rug appears to shift in colour depending on the angle of viewing. The red reads warmer when the pile leans toward the viewer and cooler when it leans away, an effect built into silk weaving and unavailable in any other fibre.

What you are buying

Comparable Indian silk weavings at this scale sell on Western dealer retail floors in the $15,000 to $40,000 range. Antique examples with strong condition run higher at international auction. This is a contemporary hand-knotted silk weaving sold direct from the workshop, drawn by a master weaver, knotted by hand at the density the tradition demands. The price reflects weaver-months and silk material grade rather than dealer markup. Silk hand-knotted carpets of this build hold and grow value with sympathetic care.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a primary sitting room or a six-seater dining setup positioned above the rug. Silk asks for restrained surroundings because the rug itself does most of the visual work. Pale plaster walls, undyed linen upholstery, walnut or teak joinery, and warm low light let the directional sheen of the silk read at its full register. Heavy patterned curtains compete with the field and should be avoided.

Conservation

Silk requires more care than wool. Rotate a half turn twice a year so light and traffic age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, never a rotating brush bar; silk pile is damaged by mechanical agitation. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth at first contact and never apply water or detergent without consulting a conservator. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every three to four years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
