Silk runners woven on the looms of northern India trace their lineage to the Mughal court ateliers of the seventeenth century, where master designers translated Persian floral grammar into a finer, more luminous medium. The narrow runner format developed in tandem with the long stone corridors of palace architecture, where a strip of silk could lead the eye from one chamber to the next without breaking the proportion of the hall. The pattern in this piece sits in that long tradition of corridor weaving.
One weaver worked this runner over roughly six months on a vertical loom in India. Pure mulberry silk forms both the foundation warps and the pile, which is why the surface returns light at every angle the way water does at dusk. Each knot was tied by hand against a cotton-cord reference, the design read line by line from a graphed cartoon pinned above the loom. The result is a 2'6" x 15' (76 x 457 cm) piece carrying several hundred thousand individual knots in mulberry silk.
The composition
A central trellis of paired vines runs the length of the runner in soft rose, ochre, and lapis, framed by a measured ivory ground that lets the colour breathe. Multi-tonal accents in jade and old gold pick up the inner medallions. Silk reflects differently when read with the pile and against it, so the piece appears to lighten and deepen as you walk its length. Over the years the rose will pull toward terracotta and the lapis will settle into a quieter blue.
What you are buying
Antique silk runners of comparable length and density, when they appear at Bonhams or Rippon Boswell with early twentieth century attribution, transact between $4,000 and $9,000. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in mulberry silk. The runner appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few floor objects keep that property over a generation of ownership.
The piece in a room
2'6" x 15' (76 x 457 cm) is the canonical scale for a long entry hall, an upstairs landing that runs past three or four doors, or the floor of a private library between bookcase walls. The multi colour palette settles against limewash and lime plaster, against painted wainscot, and against polished teak floorboards. Avoid placing the runner under heavy console legs; the silk reads best with light foot traffic and unbroken sightlines.
Conservation
Rotate end for end every spring so light wear distributes evenly across the length. Vacuum monthly, suction only, beater bar disengaged, in the direction of the pile. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never water. Hand wash by a silk-trained conservator every six to seven years. Stored properly between uses, the runner will pass to a second owner intact.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
