Silk carpet weaving in northern India traces its lineage to the Mughal court ateliers of the seventeenth century, where Safavid weavers brought from Iran by the emperor Akbar set up looms in royal workshops and trained generations of local artisans in the asymmetric knot technique. The tradition survived the decline of imperial patronage and migrated into the high-altitude valleys where cooler weather suited silk handling. The piece in front of you carries that lineage forward in a 6' x 9' Azami-pattern field rendered fully in silk.

Three weavers worked this rug for around eight months on a vertical loom. The pile is mulberry silk reeled from cocoons in northern India and twisted into a fine yarn before knotting. The foundation is fine cotton warp and weft, beaten down between knot rows to lock the structure. The dye palette runs through madder red as the dominant tone, with indigo, gold ochre, and ivory used in the floral and vine work. The knot density runs into the very-fine range that pure silk demands.

The composition

A red ground in a deep madder tone, almost garnet under warm light, with a central medallion in ivory and gold and corner spandrels in matching pattern. Vine work in indigo and pale gold runs across the field around the medallion. The border layers a meander guard band against a wider floral inner band, the proportions tuned so the field remains the visual focus. Silk reflects light at every angle, so the rug shifts tonal value as the viewer moves around it.

What you are buying

Pure silk hand-knotted carpets of this density and scale carry tags between 6,000 and 15,000 USD through Western dealers and online specialists. Auction prices for comparable pieces from the early twentieth century run higher still. The rug here is at the source production cost. Silk pile rugs appreciate with use rather than depreciating; the surface develops a soft sheen along the lines of foot traffic that no machine equivalent reproduces.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a formal sitting area, a primary bedroom with a king bed, or a study with built-in shelving. The deep red palette pairs with walnut, oxblood leather, brass detailing, and ivory plaster walls. Silk dyes hold best out of direct sun, so an east-facing or filtered-light room suits the piece. The rug welcomes traditional and contemporary furniture in equal measure.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a quarter turn every four months; silk shows wear earlier than wool and benefits from frequent rotation. Vacuum on the lowest suction setting with no beater bar; never use a brush. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth immediately. A specialist conservator should hand wash silk every four to six years. Never expose the rug to direct steam or hot water.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
