The panel layout in Indian silk weaving is one of the oldest sustained design grammars in the subcontinent, traceable in continuous use to imperial workshops of the late sixteenth century. The format breaks the field into stripes of related flower vocabulary at scaled volume. A wide central register, narrower inner and outer guards on each side, and a medallion at the heart that holds the page in tension. This rug works the format in a single dominant red, with the medallion and the bud motifs of the borders picked out in tonal shifts that read more as relief than as colour change.

Two weavers worked this loom across approximately five months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, knot density in the upper Indian range, every knot tied by feel with the Persian asymmetric throw. The dye was brought up across multiple short baths to preserve silk lustre. Red holds the field. The ivory of the medallion and the small accents in the borders sit against it as quiet figure on a strong ground.

The composition

One colour decision, carried with conviction. The red runs end to end without modulation in the field. The medallion at the centre is a paler tonal note that reads as light on the same red ground rather than as a separate colour event. Silk catches the light differently along its grain, so the field shifts between two readings of red as you walk past. The borders carry the bud motif at restraint, not pushing for attention.

What you are buying

Antique silk in this size and condition appears in the international auction record in the 12,000 to 22,000 dollar range, when it surfaces at all. New weaving in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, to the same density runs higher in Western showrooms. The rug appreciates rather than depreciates because the labour and the silk only become more expensive to commission as the pool of trained weavers shrinks each decade.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) anchors a small bedroom, a reading corner, a child's room, or the foot of a queen bed. Red sits well against teak, walnut, and cream-painted plaster. Brass lamps and warm leather furniture pair with the silk. Avoid carpet patterns or heavy florals on upholstery in the same field, since the rug expects to be the only patterned voice in its room.

Conservation

Half turn the rug each six-month interval. Vacuum suction-only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at the moment it happens with a dry cotton cloth, and never rub the silk fibre. Specialist hand-wash by a silk conservator at five to seven year intervals. Cared for this way the rug runs sixty years in active use and remains a heritable object.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
