Mulberry silk takes red better than any other natural fibre. The protein structure of silk holds the dye molecule in a way that gives the surface a depth wool cannot reach, which is why the great panel carpets of seventeenth-century northern India were almost always wrought in silk when the colour brief called for a saturated ground. This runner sits inside that tradition. A panel design built on stripes, each stripe carrying a related flower vocabulary, with palmettes connected hand to hand in the central register and bud forms rhymed across the inner and outer guards.

One weaver kept this loom for around four months. Pure silk pile on cotton warp and weft, the Persian asymmetric knot taken from a sixteenth-century Persian transmission and held as the standard ever since. Repeated short dye baths kept the silk lustre alive, since a long single immersion would have flattened the surface. The red is the field. The medallion at the centre and the small floral incidents read against it.

The composition

A field that runs deep red end to end, with the diamond medallion picking up a tonal shift at the centre. The palmettes link in a slow rhythm. Bud motifs at the inner and outer borders rhyme each other across the field. Silk lifts colour in slightly different ways along the warp than across the weft, so the same red reads denser from one approach and brighter from the other. The composition trusts a single colour decision and works through it.

What you are buying

Comparable silk runners with antique attribution carry international auction estimates in the 8,000 to 16,000 dollar band when they appear at all. Newly woven examples shelve at Western dealers at multiples of that. Silk on cotton in this format is a long-life decorative object that gains value as fewer master weavers carry the technique forward. The runner appreciates with care rather than depreciating with use.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) is the working scale for a Pooja room, a foyer, a reading chair plinth, or the foot of a single bed. The red takes well to brass, dark teak, and pale lime-washed walls. Direct light brings the silk shift forward and gives the rug its second colour through the day. Set it where it will catch some hours of natural sun.

Conservation

Turn the rug end for end twice a year. Vacuum with suction only, soft brush head, beater bar off. Spills blotted instantly with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rubbed. Specialist silk wash every six years. The fibre will survive a century of careful use and remain in heritable condition for the second generation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
