Silk weaving in northern India sits inside a tradition that runs back to the imperial workshops of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the looms first absorbed the panel layouts of Mughal manuscript painting and translated them into knotted carpet. The strict register of stripes, each carrying a related flower vocabulary at scaled volume, has been the mark of high-Indian work ever since. The piece in front of you keeps that architecture intact. A diamond medallion at the centre, four palmettes set on its axes, a wide central band of three palmette shapes linked end to end, and inner and outer guards rhyming the bud forms across the borders.
Three weavers shared this loom over roughly six months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, tied with the Persian asymmetric throw the Indian tradition has used since it absorbed the technique from sixteenth-century Persian masters. Multiple short dye baths instead of one long immersion to keep the silk lustre intact. Red on the field, ivory in the central medallion, and contained accents in the bud motifs of the borders.
The composition
Red holds the ground with conviction. The ivory medallion sits cool against it without competing for attention. The silk surface throws light differently across the warp than across the weft, so the same field reads as two colours depending on the time of day. The strict repeat in the central stripe gives the eye an even rhythm to follow without producing a hypnotic pulse, and the bud motifs in the borders pick up the same vocabulary at half the scale.
What you are buying
Antique silk pieces of this size and condition appear at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonhams in estimate bands of 18,000 to 35,000 dollars when they come to market. Western dealers price newly woven equivalents at multiples of the maker's price. Silk on cotton in this format does not lose value over time. The materials and the months of labour required to replace it only become harder to commission as fewer master weavers train the next generation.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living room, or a dining alcove for four to six. Red ground takes well to walnut, teak, and dark stone. Ivory walls hold the medallion forward. Pair with brass and a single piece of figurative art in a related red family rather than competing patterns.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum with suction only and beater bar disengaged. Treat any spill within seconds, blotting with a clean cotton cloth and never rubbing the silk pile. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a silk conservator every five to seven years. Kept this way the carpet runs the full life of its first owner and beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
