By the early seventeenth century, the silk panel had become the signature format of the Vale of India, a region whose looms have been turning out the finest knot-density carpets in India for four hundred years. The format takes a Mughal manuscript page logic of bordered registers and translates it into knotted silk, with each stripe carrying a related flower vocabulary in scaled ratios. This rug runs that lineage through a contemporary loom in the same tradition, the same fibre, and the same throw. A central diamond sits inside an inner circle, four palmettes arrayed on its axes. The wider central stripe runs three palmette types connected end to end, and the outer guard rhymes the bud motifs of the inner stripe at a quieter scale.

Two weavers worked this piece across roughly six months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, knot density at the upper end of the Indian range. Dye baths short and repeated to preserve silk lustre. Red carries the field, ivory holds the central medallion ground, and the bud forms in red, ochre, and indigo punctuate the borders.

The composition

The two-colour scheme reads as architecture rather than decoration. Red field, ivory centre, ivory borders against red ground in the guards, and the bud motifs picked out small enough that you have to step in to see how they relate. The silk surface shifts in light across the warp axis, lifting different colours forward depending on the angle. The repeat is strict, the spacing is clear, and the rug never becomes busy.

What you are buying

silk at this size and density carries international auction estimates in the 15,000 to 30,000 dollar band when comparable antique pieces come to market. New weavings in the same fibre and tradition stock in Western showrooms at well above that. Silk on cotton holds its value over decades because the materials and the labour cost of replacing the rug only rise. The piece is an inheritable object, not a furnishing.

The piece in a room

5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) sits centred under a coffee table in a primary living room, runs across the foot of a king bed, or grounds a small dining circle for four. Red on the field reads strongest against neutral walls in cream, bone, or warm grey. Pair the rug with brass accents, dark wood case furniture, and a single piece of art in a related colour family rather than competing patterns.

Conservation

Half turn the rug every six months. Vacuum with suction only, never beater bar. Address spills the second they happen with a clean dry cotton cloth, blotting with no rubbing motion. Schedule a specialist silk wash every five years. With this care the rug runs eighty years and outlasts its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
