The panel layout entered the Indian vocabulary through Mughal manuscript painting, where a single field of the page is divided into bordered cartouches, each holding a smaller flowering scene. Workshops in northern India adapted the format for the loom in the seventeenth century, and the silk weavers of the Vale refined it into a runner that reads less like a carpet and more like a scroll laid flat. The piece in front of you sits in that long lineage. A central stripe of large palmettes connected hand to hand. A diamond medallion at the heart with four palmettes set on its axes. Inner guards and outer stripes carrying repeats of bud forms.
One weaver shared this loom for roughly four months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a cotton foundation, every knot tied with the asymmetric Persian throw the Indian tradition borrowed in the sixteenth century and never let go of. The dyes are jewel-tone, drawn down through repeated short baths so the red holds on the warp without dulling and the ivory keeps the slight cool cast that lets it read as a separate field rather than as background.
The composition
Red and ivory in opposition, with the bud motifs of the inner guard and the outer stripe rhyming across the field. Silk shifts under light: walk past the rug in the morning and the red looks deeper, walk past in the evening and the ivory takes a faint warmth. The palmettes link end to end without crowding. The diamond at the centre stays quiet and lets the surrounding stripes do the talking.
What you are buying
Antique silk runners of comparable scale and condition appear at international auction in the range of 8,000 to 18,000 dollars when they surface at all, and Western dealers shelve newly woven versions at multiples of that. This is a contemporary weaving in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, to the same density. Silk on cotton in this format does not depreciate. It softens and holds value across decades of use.
The piece in a room
3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) is the working scale for a Pooja room, a foyer, the foot of a single bed, or the run between a study desk and a window. The red takes well to dark wood and brass. Ivory walls let the field breathe. Place it where afternoon light reaches the pile so the silk can show its second colour.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year. Vacuum on suction only with a soft brush head, never the beater bar. Blot any liquid spill at once with a clean cotton cloth, do not rub silk under any circumstance. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every six to eight years. Cared for this way, the runner outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
