About one in twenty silk panels comes off the loom on a black ground, since the dye chemistry required to hold the colour stable across the entire field is the most demanding in the northern Indian tradition. Indigo brought down through walnut hull across multiple short cycles, silk grade fine enough to absorb the pigment load without dulling its surface lustre, knot density held at the upper Indian end so the colour reads dense rather than chalky. This is one of the small number of black-ground pieces produced each year. Forty square feet of saturated black field, with the panel format laid into it as a structural relief: central diamond medallion with four palmettes on its axes, a wider central stripe carrying three palmette shapes connected end to end, and inner and outer guards rhyming the bud motifs of the borders at quieter scale.

Three weavers shared this loom across roughly six months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, every knot tied by feel with the Persian asymmetric throw. The floral vocabulary picks out in jewel-tone reds, indigos, ochres, and ivory against the field.

The composition

Black grounds the carpet like a closed curtain on a stage. Floral vocabulary reads forward as figure on ground, with the central diamond holding the eye at the heart of the field. Silk pile shifts the black between two values along the warp and weft axes, so the same surface reads as two related blacks depending on the angle of approach. The bud motifs rhyme each other across the borders at restrained scale, and the central stripe runs the linked palmettes at a slow pulse without becoming hypnotic.

What you are buying

Antique black-ground silk at this size is among the rarest categories in international auction, with estimates of 22,000 to 40,000 dollars when comparable stock surfaces. Newly woven equivalents shelve in Western dealer rooms at multiples of the maker's price. Silk on cotton in this format does not lose value across decades. The fibre, the dye discipline, and the months of weaver labour required to replace it only become harder to commission as the trained weaver population shrinks each generation.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living room, or a dining alcove for four to six. Black ground reads strongest against warm white walls, aged plaster, and dark wood floors. Brass, walnut, dark leather, and a single piece of art in a related colour family pair with the silk. The rug expects to be the only patterned voice in its immediate field.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each six-month interval. Vacuum suction-only, beater bar off. Blot any spill at the moment it occurs with a clean dry cotton cloth and never rub the silk surface. Specialist hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs the full life of its first owner and remains heritable.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
