Few northern Indian workshops will accept a commission for a black silk panel of any scale, since the dye chemistry that holds black across hundreds of thousands of knots is among the hardest in the tradition to keep stable. Indigo over walnut hull, multiple short cycles, careful timing, and silk grade fine enough to take the pigment load without dulling its lustre. The piece in front of you is one of the small number of black-ground panels that comes off the loom each year. Five by seven feet of dense black field, with the panel format laid into it as a relief structure: a central diamond medallion with four palmettes on its axes, a wider central stripe of three palmette shapes connected end to end, and inner and outer guards rhyming bud motifs at quieter scale.

Two weavers shared this loom across roughly six months. Pure mulberry silk pile on a fine cotton foundation, knot density at the upper Indian range, every knot tied with the Persian asymmetric throw. The floral vocabulary in the central stripe and the borders is picked out in jewel-tone reds, indigos, ochres, and clean ivory against the black ground.

The composition

Black takes the field with conviction. The floral vocabulary reads forward as figure on ground, with the central diamond medallion drawing the eye to the heart of the page. Silk pile shifts the black between two values across the warp and weft directions, lifting different incidents forward depending on the time of day. The wider central stripe runs the linked palmettes at a slow pulse, and the bud motifs in the borders rhyme each other across the field at controlled scale.

What you are buying

Antique black-ground silk pieces at this size are the rarest tier in the international auction record, with estimates of 18,000 to 35,000 dollars when comparable stock surfaces. New weavings in the same fibre and density carry Western dealer prices well above that. Silk on cotton in this format does not depreciate. The materials and the labour required to commission a replacement only become harder to source as fewer master weavers train into the discipline each generation.

The piece in a room

5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) anchors a primary living room under a coffee table, runs across the foot of a king bed, or holds a small dining circle for four. Black field holds best against warm pale walls and aged wood floors. Brass, walnut, dark leather, and a single piece of figurative art in a related colour family pair with the silk. Direct daylight is welcome and brings the surface shift forward.

Conservation

Half turn the rug each six-month cycle. Vacuum suction-only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at the moment it occurs with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub. Specialist silk hand-wash by a trained conservator every five to seven years. With this discipline the rug runs eighty years and remains a heritable object.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
